My quest for great NY-style pizza in Dallas never ends. Although I have found a few excellent brick-oven establishments, I'm yet to find a great 'by-the-slice' pizza joint in Dallas.
A four-star average lured me to NY Pizza Palace and the owner/manager was very friendly. They have some very generous lunch specials (2 slices + coke = $5). The pizza here wasn't particular fresh-looking (it was that post-lunchtime lull) but we ordered a couple of slices of pepperoni.
Nothing was terrible. The outside crust actually tasted great but was a little too limp/soggy in the middle. Pepperonis were average but only 2-3 per slice. A little too skimpy for my taste. Sauce was tasty. Interior decor is spacey albeit a bit lonely and desolate. On the upside, they do have a TV.
Overall, this place deserves 3 stars. Add half a star if you're on a budget. -

I stopped by here for lunch to get a quick NY style pizza fix. The pepperoni and cheese pizzas are typically ready and quick to buy by the slice. I ordered one of each, took just about 5 minutes to heat up, and total was about $5 (2 slices). It will fill you up and has a great taste to it!

NY Pizza Palace was my go-to place for great pizza but I think we need to go our separate ways. The pizza has always been good. Great quality, great taste, and just lovely overall. When they make your order flawlessly, it's the absolute best and I'd give this place 5 stars simply because of the pizza. But with my most recent order, they dropped the ball and messed up my order.
I'm one of those rare souls who enjoys pineapple as a topping, but instead, they made my pie with pepperoni (trying to make me conform to society, eh? j/k) and it wasn't until I got home that I realized the mistake. I'm sure they would've fixed it, but I'm a "get it right the first time" type and I wasn't going to drag my toosh in there, again. That was strike one.
Strike two occurred during purchase. Unless you explicitly say, "I want the XYZ deal for $xx.xx" they will try charge you the regular price, which I thought was ridiculous. If you advertise that I can get 2 large, 2-topping pizzas for $20.99, don't try to make me pay $30 ($11 for each large, then $1.50 per topping) and then act surprised when I pose the question, "Can't I redeem this deal?" I thought that was shady.
Had it not been for those 2 mishaps, I would've gladly given this place 5 stars, but there are some things I just can't compromise on. -

Good pizza, for dallas area...
i just returned from an almost 3 month trip back to NY, I suppose I'm in a bit of snobby mode...
starting with the good - The one thing this place definitely has nailed exceptionally well is the consistantly thin crust.
I'm gonna say they actually do a better job of this than most NY (Manhattan, LI, and 4 of the 5 boroughs that i travel all over in the name of pizza. lol)
They are also extremely friendly (as others have reported).
The sauce is good.
not the exceptional tomatoeie flavor i most love in ny, but better than the mostly acidic, sour or pungent sauces most texas places use.
What disappointed me a bit was the just "average" cheese.
it was whole milk, realmozzarella, but not the delicious higher grade used in most ny places. for example, try a place that uses Grande brand cheese. there's a few around the Dallas/plano area that do. these better cheeses are usually slightly yellower and more oil content.
but before any judgement is passed here, i did have a long conversation with the owners, and credit to them for being fully aware of this, and making a conscious decision to adjust for the texas market. :(
they told me that when they originally opened 9 years ago, they actually did use Grande cheese (my personal favorite), but customers complained it was too greasy, so switched it out.
this isn't the 1st time I've heard this from experienced ny pizza places that moved here and attempted to bring a 'slice if NY' over.
unfortunately, and something i guess i just need to accept, is that Texans (which in dallas much means a mix of career transplants from around the country) often don't appreciate true ny pizza.
often, high oil content cheese, and thin crust that doesn't easily support the wealth of meaty topping preferred in this region, just isn't what people want.
maybe we need to start calling it 'Texas style' pizza, since it's not really ny style... and reserve 'ny style' for the few places that stick to their guns and truly make ny style pizza, in spite of going against popular texas preferences ?
